The Wellness Path
Micropractice #3
How to Sit
It's not a news flash that we live in an increasingly sedentary society. In the US, adults sit an average of 6 hours per day.
A sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity is associated with
increased risk of chronic disease and death, plus a range of other
health problems like back, neck, and shoulder pain.
But it's not just how long we sit that damages our health.
It's how we sit.
Here's a powerful graphic published by the Washington Post depicting the
slouched, collapsed, head-forward posture so common today. It describes
the serious health risks associated with putting your body in this
position for hours a day.
I keep a copy by my desk as a reminder of
the Hazards of Sitting. I encourage you to do so too. You can download a
copy here.
The Antidote— Micropractice #3
In Micropractice #3, I guide you through the specifics of Seated Neutral Posture.
I learned this posture from my main teacher, Master Bruce Frantzis. It provides a way to sit that is balanced, upright, open, and relaxed.
As I describe in the video, practicing Seated Neutral Postures provides an antidote to the risks of the posture depicted above.
So you can sit in a way that supports your health.
Helping you release
tension.
Helping your body feel good.
Helping your head feel clear.
Even when sitting for extended periods.
I know you'll have lots of opportunities each day to practice How to Sit.
My recommendation: Give it go.
I encourage you to experiment with dropping this Micropractice into your busy day. Five minutes here. Five minutes there.
Do this for a week.
Evaluate how you respond to it. Your body. Your mind. Your emotions.
I anticipate you'll find it becomes a powerful tool for releasing tension and stress in the mouth and jaw and for lowering tension in your entire nervous system.
